I worked with Frea Lewis aka Sugar Mummah to help her to create a logo for her new business.. she is a really talented chef creating her own inventive desserts, biscuits and cakes. She is filling up the local cafes of Port Macquarie, Australia with her mouth watering treats. Here’s my catch up 6 months into her small business adventure…
Rebecca - So let’s have a little potted history of the path that led you to start Sugar Mummah…
Frea - “At 18 I did two years of acting then, as any good actor does, I became a waitress! I always had my head in the kitchen (not just flirting with the chefs!). It intrigued me: the pace, the drive, the art!! After 10 years of managing restaurants ( including a move to London where I became a barista… loved it!)
Back home (Australia), I got a job in my-now-partner-in-crime’s restaurant called Fusion 7. He was stuck for a chef so I offered to help….2 weeks later I felt like I was home, everything fell into place and I felt a calm in myself that I had never known. I started my apprenticeship in cooking at 29! Desserts were kind of thrown at me and I felt like the universe finally had ideas for me… and I have never looked back. “
R: When we first started discussing your logo, you were full of excitement and trepidation. Six months in...what three words best describe how are you feeling about Sugar Mummah today?!
Frea: Tired, blessed and excited !
R: What is your signature sweet and why?
Frea: Well the favourite is the salted caramel “Kingston” it’s a twist on an Australian classic ! 2 x coconut and golden syrup biscuits with salted caramel buttercream in between …I don’t know what my signature sweet is yet! I feel I’m still trying to work that out and I’m loving that journey!
R: Where does your flavour combination inspiration come from?
Frea: Honestly … my dreams. I have always dreamt about my sweets! in the restaurant my partner and I had I would eat something or read about an ingredient and then I would sleep on it and wake up and go “yep I got it!!!” I know it sounds weird but I’m a very vivid dreamer!
R: Are there any surprise benefits to working for yourself?
Frea: Def! its all on my terms … if I need a day with my partner or my little boy I can take it! All of my customers have families and totally understand it really is a blessing!
